Intouch Distinguished Speaker, Rob McFarlane, TELUS, "Income Trusts",
January 24, 2007
On September 11th, 2006 Telus Corporation announced approval of a plan to convert Canada’s second largest telephone company into Canada’s largest income trust. Second only to BCE in the Canadian telecommunications sector, Vancouver, British Columbia-based Telus is the dominant phone company in the West and operates one of the country's biggest wireless networks, with over10.4 million customers and employing 30,000 people.
On October 31st, 2006 Minister of Finance Jim Flaherty announced the Federal Government’s Tax Fairness Plan, which, according to the Minister, was intended to restore balance to the Canadian tax system. The decision blocked the plans by Telus and rival BCE to convert to income trusts.
Ivey BC invited Telus EVP and CFO Bob McFarlane, MBA 1985, to offer his perspective on the decision and discuss how Telus will move forward from this decision. Bob will be joined by Ivey Associate Professor in finance and Associate Dean of Faculty Development and Research Craig Dunbar who will comment on the income trusts issue and moderate the discussion.
This event was SOLD OUT and a great success. View photos from this event in the photogallery.

2004 SIGNATURE WINE AND DINE EVENT - Thursday, March 4th, 2004
The Ivey Alumni Association of British Columbia held its third annual Dine with Wine Signature Event Thursday, March 4th, 2004 at the Westin Bayshore Resort and Marina featuring the wines of Tinhorn Creek Estate Winery, a gourmet dinner and silent auction fundraiser. Our Emcee for the evening was Maureen F. Fitzgerald. Winemaker Ken Oldfield discussed each of the five featured wines for the evening, the story behind the success of Tinhorn and his perspective on the BC wine industry.
Our past events featuring premium vintners Burrowing Owl and Blue Mountain Winery were a big success, making this the top Ivey Alumni event on the calendar for the BC alumni chapter. The accompanying silent auctions add to the fun as attendees compete for featuring premium products and services all around BC and from Ivey. It also is a big contributor to the IAABC fundraising efforts for the year.

A COMICAL BOAT CRUISE -
OLAND SPECIALTY BEER TASTING EVENT - October 2003
Besides sampling the great beers in the Interbrew family, selected alumni even had a try at pouring a glass of Stella Artois, while adhering to their strict procedures. Our participants certainly gained a deeper appreciation of the beer industry and the "simple" procedure of pouring a pint.
Thanks again to Lynda and the Oland Specialty Beer Institute for this wonderful field trip. Thank you to Alim Jiwa and Pierre Theriault for their help as greeters. Thanks also to Eric Lee for arranging the event and being the photographer. A great time was had by all.
"On October 29th, 2003, a thirsty Ivey crowd assembled for the SOLD OUT Oland Specialty Beer Institute event in Yaletown. Our gracious host, Lynda Askew, gave us the low down on the history of beer and the art and science of brewing and pouring. Did you know Canadians annually drink almost as much beer as milk? September 18th, 2003
Despite the wet conditions and threatening skies, 40 brave Ivey sailors headed out on the M.V. Royal Vancouver I last Thursday.
We greeted old friends and met new ones while enjoying a delicious meal and the scenery of the city.
Thanks to Thealzel Lee for her organization and planning. We look forward to another cruise next year!
